For demonstrating the resonant fluorescence of sodium. It can be clearly demonstrated that energy can only be absorbed at a resonant frequency. The frequency of the incident light must coincide exactly with one of the atom's resonant frequencies. It is not possible to sub-divide the quantum energy h x f.
When the tube is illuminated with sodium light at approx. 200°C, the entire bulb lights up. The sodium D line can be observed very clearly.
When the tube is illuminated with white incandescent light at approx. 240°C, the light of the same wavelength as the D-line is absorbed, and dark lines become visible in the colour spectrum in the spectroscope.
The highly evacuated tube, coated with repeatedly distilled sodium and filled with argon, is operated using the heater 8482190.
